Main Event: Yan Xiaonon Vs. Mackenzie Dern
Last Saturday showcased one of the most exhilarating matches in the UFC women’s strawweight division. The headlines? Yan Xiaonon makes an impressive comeback and lands a victory against Mackenzie Dern by majority decision.
This is monumental for Yan, who had been on somewhat of a losing streak for the past two matches. However, when the bells rang this Saturday night, Yan became a beast in the ring and fought tooth and nail to secure this well-deserved victory.
Yan Xiaonon
Born in Shenyang, Liaoning, China, Yan Xiaonon is one of the most lethal strikers in UFC. This 33-year-old mixed martial artist knows all the moves and is one of the best strikers in the game. Yan holds the # 6 rank in the entire UFC women’s strawweight roster, proving that she is a force to be reckoned with.
Yan Xiaonon made her UFC debut in 2017 when she went up against the Hawaiian MMA expert Kailin Curran. The match showcased Yan’s exceptional striking abilities and saw her as the final victor. That was the moment the world was exposed to the hard-hitting Yan, who earned the nickname ‘Fury.’ Xiaonon went on to fight and win against a slew of worthy adversaries, including the now retired Claudia Gadelha.
Until 2020, Xiaonon was practically undefeated, scoring major victories against several tough opponents. Things took a turn for Yan in 2021, however, when she lost her very first UFC bout against the talented Carla Esparza. Then, in march 2021, Yan was beaten yet again by Marina Rodriguez.
After two back-to-back losses, Xiaonon took a step back to undergo rigorous training. She made some major improvements in her defense against grappling moves. After reworking her techniques, Yan was now confident that she would turn things around in the upcoming match.
Mackenzie Dern
Mackenzie Dern is somewhat of a prodigal figure in the MMA world and has the skills and determination to back it up. This Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu expert from Phoenix, Arizona, is the daughter of the legendary Wellington Dias, also known as Megaton amongst mixed martial arts circles.
Mackenzie’s UFC career started in 2018 when she faced Ashley Yoder. Needless to say, Dern won the match without any hiccups, proving that she has the capability to be an elite fighter. Soon, she would fight and win against the likes of Amanda Brungade, Nina Nunes, Rando Markos, Hannah Cifers, and Vina Jandiroba.
Although Dern is a solid competitor and an elite fighter, she has suffered some losses over the years. 2019 saw her first defeat at the hands of Amanda Ribas, while in 2021, she lost her match against Marina Rodriguez. But despite these losses, Mackenzie still has her head in the game and always comes back with some major improvements.
Having recently won a commendable victory against Tecia Torress, Mackenzie was all set to fight against the rising star, Yan Xiaonon. Little did she know, this fight would hit her with plenty of surprises.
The Match
Starting from the first round, we could see the effectiveness of Xiaonon’s exceptional striking abilities as she pommeled Mackenzie with a deadly combo early on in the game. Dern used her kicks to return fire from a safe distance; Yan answered this with a powerful right hand that landed straight on Dern’s right eye.
Mackenzie tried to use her superior grappling skills against her opponent during the last 45 seconds and managed to land a hip throw. However, she was facing an improved version of Xiaonon, who regained control and ended up on top.
Dern realized that this was no ordinary opponent and improved her game in the second round. Her early attempts at landing a takedown were unsuccessful, as Yan managed to counter and get on top of her. Things only changed for Dern when she landed an omoplata, trapping Yan in place without any defenses. After being neatly positioned behind Yan, Mackenzie landed several blows on her opponent, who was only saved by the bell.
Xiaonon displayed her superior striking abilities in round 3 when both fighters went pound for pound against each other. Both fighters landed some pretty good shots; however, it was clear that Yan was getting the better of this exchange. Mackenzie realized she could not win the exchange and, instead, landed a takedown in the last five seconds.
Mackenzie tried to hold her own against Yan during the last two rounds, often attempting takedowns to overpower her stronger opponent. On the other hand, Yan defended against these grapple attempts and landed a series of punches, kicks, and deadly combos against her opponent.
Yan Xiaonon’s superior striking skills and ability to defend against countless takedowns seem to have gotten the judges’ attention, who scored her higher during the match. The final result? Yan defeats Mackenzie by the judge’s decision.
