UFC Fight Night 209
The Ultimate Fighting Championship traveled to France for Fight Night 209 in the Accor Arena in Paris. It took place on Saturday, September 3rd, 2022, at 3:00 PM ET.
The main event was headed by the fight between France’s Cyril Gane and Australia’s Tai Tuivasa, while the co-main event was between Robert Whittaker and Marvin Vettori.
Fight fans in France got to see what they wanted as their countryman, Cyril Gane, came out triumphant against the brave and entertaining Tai Tuivasa. The night ended with all the French fighters getting a clean sweep without any losses.
Main Event – Gane vs. Tuivasa
The main event was a feast for the eyes of the MMA fans, as Ciryl Gane and Tai Tuivasa brought the house down at UFC 209. Ciryl Gane weighed 247 pounds, while Tai Tuvasa was 266 pounds. Gane had a longer reach of 81”, while Tavasa had a reach of 75”.
Cyril Gane won the bout with a technical knockout in the third round. Take a look at how the fight went as we take you on a walk through all three rounds.
Round 1
The first round started with both fighters measuring their distances and sizing each other. Gane made first contact by landing leg kicks on Tuivasa, but Tuvasa also returned fire. However, the first three minutes were a bit slow, and nothing significant happened.
There were jabs and minor punches here and there, but with not much damage. Tuvasa controlled the pace of the fight, with Gane being outside the circle. Gane took his time and went for a punch that almost landed heavily on Tuivasa, but he escaped unhurt, fortunately.
Tai stayed patient and waited for openings in Cyril’s defense, landing a counter-punch on Cyril. With a minute left on the clock, things started getting feistier as Gane landed a jab and a kick on Tuivasa’s right shoulder.
Tai Tuivasa came right back at Gane with a punch combo, which Gane was able to dodge. Tuivasa is known for his attack-minded fighting style, so it was no surprise to see him go at Gane from the get-go.
The first round ended with little to no drama to talk about during the break. The only significance of the first round was the electric atmosphere created by the crowd in the Accor Arena.
Round 2
The second round started how the first did – treading carefully. Both fighters looked swift on their feet as they were sizing up one another. There were a couple of jabs and leg kicks from Gane on Tuivasa in the first two minutes after the restart.
After minute 2, Tuivasa landed a heavy right hand on Gane’s right cheek, shaking Cyril up a bit. Gane also responded with a left swing on Tuivasa after a few seconds.
However, Tuivasa showed a lot of patience in this fight. He did not rush in to land an instant knockout punch against Cyril Gane. That probably shows his respect for his opponent’s fighting skills.
Tai is usually known as a fighter who goes looking for quick finishes. He hadn’t seen past two rounds in the last three years before the fight against Gane. Tuivasa’s team could be heard speaking into his ears that the second round was his to take.
Back to the fight, and Gane was landing leg kicks, followed by a couple of quick jabs. It was apparent who had the better striking skills, as Gane looked like a seasoned boxer. On the other hand, Tuivasa is more of a fighter that goes looking for that heavy punch.
Tuivasa was not being beaten up black and blue, but it was apparent that Cyril Gane was the one winning the second round. However, Tuivasa shocked the French crowd by knocking down Cyril Gane in the 4th minute. He landed a heavy right hand on Gane’s chin; making his opponent fall to the floor.
Once he got up, Gane launched a few jabs at Tuivasa and cut his eye. This prompted a response from Tuivasa, and both fighters exchanged blows. Gane landed heavy body kicks that affected Tai’s performance.
They kept exchanging blows and kicks until the final whistle, ending a wild second round.
Round 3
The third round started with the same strategies from both fighters. Gane stayed outside, with Tuivasa marching forward in search of his finishing move.
The fight that ensued in this round was nothing but chaos. Cyril Gane managed to land body kicks on Tuivasa, which unsettled him. Tuivasa’s face was bloodied due to the cut on his left eye.
When the body kicks were having an impact on Tuivasa, Cyril Gane went for the kill but was unsuccessful due to Tuivasa swinging his heavy-duty hands powerfully. This made Gane think twice and slowed down his attacks by a notch.
Tuivasa managed to land some leg kicks on Gane, showing how tough of a fighter he is. He persevered throughout the third round even though he was getting battered. With two minutes left in the round, Gane intensified his attacks on Tuivasa and dished out plenty of damage, attacking his body with piercing kicks.
Gane let out a nasty right hook on Tuivasa’s chin, making him fall flat on his feet. He followed it up with two hammer blows on an unconscious Tuivasa to cement the win.
Cyrin Gane knocked out Tai Tuivasa in the 5th minute of the third round, completing a full sweep by all the French fighters on Fight Night Paris.
