Everton vs West Ham – Two Struggling British Managers Face Off
Everton vs West Ham
West Ham travels to the blue part of Merseyside to face Everton at Goodison Park, at 9:15 AM ET, on Sunday, 18th September 2022. These two historic English teams have not started their season well and are yet to convince their supporters.
Managed by two iconic faces of the game, the Toffees and the Hammers have not been at their best this season. West Ham has won only one of their opening 6 games, while Everton has not registered a win yet.
The fans have been running low on patience, and both teams will have to prove they can bounce back with a win this Sunday.
Everton Football Club
Everton is the only English club in the history of the English Premier League not to get relegated to the championship. All the other historic teams have gone down to the lower leagues at least once.
They have been there and about in the mid-table positions most seasons, but the club is now going through a transitional period with Frank Lampard in charge. Since the departure of David Moyes, Everton has not reached the highs of yesteryears.
They appointed Roberto Martinez after Moyes left, which was partly successful. However, after the departure of Martinez, his successors have not taken Everton forward. Instead, the club has been moving backward for the past few years.
Everton reached their lowest point when they appointed Rafa Benitez as their manager. Benitez, a Liverpool legend, was not received well by Everton fans. Benitez was finally sacked in the middle of the season as the club went through turbulent times.
Season So Far
Frank Lampard was appointed the coach on a 2-and-a-half-year contract, and he helped Everton avoid relegation in the previous season’s last game.
The 2022-23 season started with a game against Chelsea at Goodison Park, and Lampard’s Everton was up for the fight. They played an exceptional game, dominating Chelsea throughout the whole game, but they lost by a goal to nil through Jorginho’s late penalty kick.
Their second game was against Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa at Villa Park, and the game was level till the 85th minute until Buendia scored a second goal to win all three points. Since then, Lampard’s team has drawn all the games till now.
They have not registered a win to date, which gives the supporters a similar feeling to last season, where they had to witness their team fight the relegation battle that none imagined would happen in their lives. The fight to the end was incredible yet very stressful for the Everton faithful.
Though Everton is not gaining more points for their scoreboard, they are certainly not on a losing streak. They have drawn against Nottingham Forest, Brentford, Leeds, and Liverpool. This shows how much they have worked on themselves defensively.
They will surely win games when their strikers start scoring, which is what Lampard has been working on in training.
West Ham
West Ham is one of London’s oldest soccer clubs, and they have an excellent premier league history. They were not always near the top of the pyramid, but the appointment of David Moyes two seasons back has transformed them into giant killers.
They finished 6th in the 20-21 season and 7th the following season. It goes to show how far West Ham has grown in recent years. They have a modern stadium with state-of-the-art facilities and have been bringing in players of high caliber for the past few years.
However, David Moyes and his players are not performing on the same level this season, as they have been hit with injuries. They have managed to get only one win this season and a draw. They have lost all the other 4 games, with the pressure mounting on Moyes to get back to winning ways.
Season So Far
West Ham played their first game of the season against Manchester City, the defending champions. Though West Ham beat City the previous seasons, there was going to be only one outcome this time. Erling Haaland scored two goals for City to take all three points.
They lost their second game too against the newly-promoted Nottingham Forest. Awoniyi scored the lone goal to gain 3 precious points for Nottingham. In the third game, they had a poor display against Brighton, too, losing 2-0 to Graham Potter’s men.
Their only win came against Aston Villa in their 4th game, winning all three points by scoring one goal. Their next two games were against Tottenham and Chelsea, local London rivals.
The game against Tottenham was an even one, as they both scored a goal to share the spoils. West Ham was the better team in the game. Their 6th match came against Chelsea, where they were robbed of a draw after VAR intervened to disallow their second goal.
After the match, David Moyes spoke his mind to the reporters. He argued that the goal should’ve stood as there was no foul on Mendy by his player. It was again a case of poor refereeing decisions, as is occurring in the Premier League every week.
Everton vs. West Ham – Game Preview
Both teams have been struggling to score goals this season. If they score goals up front, they are half as bad as people think.
Soccer fans would hope that Everton can get their first win against West Ham this season, but the latter will also be in no charitable mood. David Moyes and Frank Lampard will ensure they prepare their teams to match each other’s tactics.
The home advantage is on Everton, but West Ham can compete against anyone on their day.
