UFC Fight Night: Nzechukwu Vs. Cutelaba
UFC Main Event Gets Cancelled In The Last Minute
Fight fans were hyped to see Derrick Lewis go up against Sergey Spivak on November 19th, 2022. The much-awaited fight was set to take place in the UFC’s apex facility in Las Vegas. It would be a legendary matchup for UFC fans, and everyone wanted to get in on the action.
However, the fight was canceled literally at the last minute. The reason? Derrick Lewis fell ill before the fight and could not continue with the matchup. While this was disappointing to fans, we understand that the reason behind it was genuine. In its place, fans saw another action-packed match between two of UFC’s most promising fighters.
New Main Event: Nzechukwu Vs. Cutelaba
It wasn’t the main event we asked for, but it was definitely one we were happy with. Kennedy Nzechukwu went toe to toe against Ion Cutelaba in a fast-paced, action-packed match worthy of main event status.
This wasn’t one of those lazy droolers where nothing much happens, nor was it a match filled with any hesitation. Both fighters kept their focus and fists on the target from the beginning of the fight and did not back down an inch.
Although the fight lasted only two rounds, it was filled with raw adrenaline. Both fighters were evenly matched and evenly deadly in the octagon. The final outcome? The Nigerian mixed martial, Nzechukwu, tore his opponent to pieces, knocking Cutelaba out in the second round.
Kennedy Nzechukwu’s UFC Journey
Kennedy Nzechukwu has been rightly named the African Savage by his fans, and we know exactly why after this fight. The 30-year-old has had a great career in UFC, winning most of his bouts.
2019 Fights
Nzechukwu started fighting in UFC in 2019 and lost his first match against Paul Craig. Although Nzechukwu put up a good fight, Craig got a submission out of him in the third round. While this was upsetting for Nzechukwu, he knew he had to get better, and that’s what he did.
The African Savage got back on the horse and trained rigorously, focusing on tackles, clinches, and submission holds. He returned a few months later to face his second opponent in the UFC, Darko Stosic. The match lasted three rounds, and Nzechukwu was crowned the victor by decision.
2021 Fights
2021 was a great year for the Nigerian mixed martial artist as he won two back-to-back fights. His first bout of the year was against Danilo Marques, a ferocious contender. Nzechukwu fought hard and knocked him out in the third round, winning his second official UFC fight.
Later that year, he faced off against Jang Da Un, a fighter known for his impressive speed and tenacity. Nzechukwu didn’t ease up on his opponent and knocked him out in the first round, earning the title of the African Savage.
2022 Fights
This year started on a negative note for the Nigerian warrior, as he suffered a loss in his first fight. His opponent was the Romanian mixed martial artist Nicolae Negumereanu.
Nicolae proved to be a challenge for Nzechukwu; no matter how hard he went at Nicolae, he could not get a signature knockout like in his previous fights. The fight lasted for three rounds, and the judges ruled in favor of Negumereanu, and rightly so.
Despite the upsetting loss, Nzechukwu dived right back into his next fight against Karl Roberson. We could see that the African Savage was back, as he knocked out Roberson in the third round. This was exactly what his fans had come to see.
With a string of knockouts on his record, Nzechukwu proudly moved on to his next scheduled fight. His opponent? The Moldovian mixed martial artist with a long history in the UFC. Fans call him ‘The Hulk,’ for his brute strength, raw power, and ferocious tenacity.
Kennedy Nzechukwu VS. Ion Cutelaba: The Fight
Not only was this match one of the greatest fights we’ve ever seen, but it was also quite evenly matched. Both fighters used their strengths to the max, hoping to gain an advantage. What initially started out as Cutebala gaining momentum soon came crashing down for the Moldovian Hulk. In the end, Nzechukwu proved that speed and precision, not brute strength, come out on top.
Round 1
The first round definitely belonged to Cutelaba, who severely punished Nzechukwu with his intense grapples, powerful throws, and brutal takedowns. To be fair, Nzechukwu held his ground as long as he was in the center of the ring, and Cutelaba realized this. So he pushed the African Savage up against the fence, and that’s when things started to go his way.
Nzechukwu couldn’t defend himself with his back to the fence, especially against an opponent like Cutelabla. The Hulk took advantage of this and caught his opponent in multiple grapples and takedowns. From here, he could get into full mount and enjoy a dominant position. Nzechukwu luckily managed to escape before Cutelaba could administer a submission.
Round 2
Nzechukwu learned from the previous round that Cutelaba always exposed his head while throwing his hands. Also, the Hulk mainly focused on throwing round punches, which gave Nzechukwu many chances to cut through with precise straight punches. It worked brilliantly for Nzechukwu.
The round really started to kick off when Nzechukwu began dealing knee shots to the face. Cutelaba would lower his head too much during his attacks, especially while attempting takedowns. Nzechukwu took advantage of this and kneed his opponent to the head every time this happened, causing significant damage.
Nzechukwu hit Cutelabal with a strong knee that knocked the sense out of the Moldovian Hulk. And then, with a flurry of strong punches, Nzechukwu was able to land a TKO, winning the fight. What a powerful way to end this impromptu main event.
